From "Fake it till you make it" to "Practice it till you embody it"

The phrase "fake it till you make it" is catchy and memorable, but it can be problematic. The idea of faking it doesn't sit well with many people who value authenticity. It can contribute to imposter syndrome and a nagging feeling of being a fraud.

On the other hand, those who fully embrace "faking it till you make it" can come across as irritatingly overconfident to more earnest individuals.

Yet, the phrase has persisted for a reason – there's some truth to it. When feeling down, activating an empowering mindset is easier said than done, but proven techniques like controlled breathing, smiling, and singing can help calm the mind.

Reframing the Approach

Instead of "faking it," I prefer to think of it as "practicing it till you embody it." Rather than pretending to be something you're not, you're actively practicing habits and behaviors that can lead you to genuinely embody the desired state.

It's not about faking confidence; it's about consistently practicing confident behaviors until they become second nature. It's not about faking positivity; it's about regularly engaging in practices that cultivate a positive mindset.

The Power of Practice

The key is consistent practice. Just as an actor doesn't become a character overnight, but through repeated rehearsals and performances, we too can embody the qualities we aspire to by consistently practicing them.

Where in your life have you struggled with the idea of "faking it till you make it"? Consider reframing it as "practicing it till you embody it." Identify the habits, behaviors, and practices that align with your desired state, and commit to consistently engaging in them. Over time, you'll find that you've genuinely embodied the qualities you've been practicing.
